Lake District Beaches: Haverigg Beach

We discovered Haverigg beach completely by accident! We liked it so much that we keep going back. Here’s what there is to know about this less well known part of the Lake District.

Where is Haverigg Beach?

Haverigg village sits on the south-west coast of Cumbria, close to Millom and not far from Broughton in Furness. Visitors don’t often make it this far, as the nearby areas are less of an attraction than the rest of the Lake District, but the Cumbrian coast is definitely worth a visit.

Haverigg Beach is within a fairly sheltered bay, across from Roanhead Beach, also a favourite of ours.

Haverigg Beach itself is on the outskirts of Haverigg village, and can be found by following directions to Harbour Lights Campsite.

Parking at Haverigg Beach

There is a huge layby just behind the beach with free parking. We’ve never had a problem getting parked and we haven’t always been the earliest!

Tip: Try not to park right next to the path down to the beach, the ice cream van usually arrives around lunchtime and this is where they likes to park! We’ve been a few times now and this seems like some sort of unwritten rule.

The Beach

The beach itself is lovely. For a small village, it’s a good sized beach, and every time we’ve been we’ve managed to get enough space and not feel crowded. This is super important to us because as a family, we do NOT cope well with super busy places.

A couple of times it’s been just us on the beach! Dreamy!

The beach is sandy, with a tide that comes in fairly slowly. It is slow enough not to cause any problems, but fast enough that it’s exciting to watch your moat fill up around your sandcastle (and then your sandcastle get destroyed!).

It’s also a fairly flat beach (and not many places are flat in the Lake District so that’s a nice treat! Perfect for beach games and picnics.

At the back of the beach are huge rocks, perfect for sitting on, and especially great for climbing on! They also give a good amount of shelter so sitting in front of them means you’re more protected from any wind, which is highly recommended.

Food and Drink

There are quite a few options for food and drink near Haverigg Beach if you’re wanting to buy something.

Option 1 is the ice cream van, we got ice creams from there on our last visit and the prices were pretty reasonable.

Option 2 Betty’s Beach Hut. Just down the beach is Betty’s Beach Hut, where you can sit in or get takeaway, with all sorts of food on offer.

Option 3 Riva Gelato. Just across the road from the beach is the Harbour Lights campsite. Riva Gelato is their ice cream and coffee shop, selling lovely cakes and treats. We’ve stayed at this campsite and enjoyed their ice creams, we would definitely recommend!

And that’s Haverigg Beach! Let us know if you try it, and what you think. Enjoy!
